Re: Ambushes and Supply Raids kicking my a**
Barely related, but I ended up starting a new game, but this time on easy mood because I suck. Hopefully things get more interesting because right now it is too easy. I'm sure actually going into supply raids fully loaded might still be a challenge, and now I may have too many long ranged stationar...

Re: Ambushes and Supply Raids kicking my a**
Also playing on Veteran in July -- completed vanilla commander ironman without too much trouble -- and getting my ass handed to me in these missions. I've had three missions this month, troop column, network tower, and a supply raid. I've lost 4-5 troops on every mission, but managed to complete the...

@Inemuri: I have to disagree that Poker is a better analogy to Xcom than chess. [...] There is no way to bluff in Xcom. I didn't intend to say as a complete analogy for XCOM, poker is superior to chess . The reason I brought up poker as an analogy was to emphasise that XCOM isn't purely a stragetic...

Re: LW 2 - Linux & Mac
your sniper not being able to shot with his rifle, even though having snap shot perk. This probably isn't a bug. The snap shot perk changes how the sniper works quite a lot: https://www.reddit.com/r/Xcom/comments/5re4wl/lw2_anyone_know_why_snap_shot_is_decreasing_my/ on the LW2 menu, what does &quo...

Re: LW 2 - Linux & Mac
I'm on Linux, and I've not had any problems with the character pool. You're the first person I've come across with the problem, and I'm afraid I have no idea what to suggest beyond the basic troubleshooting steps.

You can find mods in the XCOM 2 Steam Workshop. If it's not the ones I list below, then you'll find what you're looking for there. Some YouTubers provide a list of mods they use, so you could check that out. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=688405905 https://steamcommunity.com/...

Re: Aliens getting free shots
Look at Hearthstone. By all accounts, it is an RNG clusterfuck but that is part of its charm to a certain group of players. It still is able to retain interest in a segment of players that hate RNG, because it still retains many aspects of predictability that reward player skill. If that was remove...

Re: Aliens getting free shots
Even if you removed the alien's free shots, if you're unlucky you can still lose soldiers through no fault of your own. The keyword being you had to be unlucky, and even then it usually was in your power to stop it (by giving up the objective or something). I think this could also be true of the al...

Re: Aliens getting free shots
As someone said in this thread (or some other, can't remember), XCOM isn't a game about rolling dice. It's about choosing when to roll the dice when it is favorable to you. I'd say you try and minimise the chances of a failure, but you cannot eliminate them. The only way to do that is to rely on gu...

Re: Aliens getting free shots
I'm loving the free shots the aliens get. I've had two soldiers one-shot due to them in my campaign so far. Makes it feel like anyone can die at any moment. Makes me nervous before a mission starts, which is what I want from XCOM. I mean you might as well just insert a mechanic that rolls a dice th...

Re: Difficulty gap
Hi everyone and thanks for this fantastic mod to the Pavonis team I'm a not-so-great Xcom player that played LW1 for a while and just started out with LW a couple days ago. Long story short, i feel there is a way too big gap in difficulty between Rookie and Veteran. LW1 Normal difficult felt challe...

Re: LW 2 - Linux & Mac
So I've copied the .upk files into the game installation's share/data/xcomgame/cookedpcconsole directory. When that didn't work, I removed the config files in ~/.local/share/feral-interactive/XCOM2/VFS/Local/my\ games/XCOM2/XComGame/Config to regenerate them. But that didn't work either. Am I remov...

Re: LW 2 - Linux & Mac
I haven't seen any of the new load screens though, so that must be the culprit of the savegame loading hangs. I see a black screen on (what I presume are) the new loading screens, but I still hear the loading sound and it doesn't freeze. I am having the odd crash, but that's just as likely to be th...

Re: Strategy for timed missions
Inemuri, your willingness to try new strategies first instead of immediately modding that aspect of the game out warms my heart. Truly. :D Part of me wants to play the game as the devs intended, and it'll not let me mod it even if I wanted to. I didn't bother using collections of mods before LW2 be...

Re: Strategy for timed missions
In vanilla the strategy was blow ambush on the first pod. My most successful missions in long war 2 have been the ones where I got closest to the objective before violence broke out. Instead of killing the aliens to succeed, combat now carries a fatal cost in turns. I think that might be what I'm l...

Re: Strategy for timed missions
What does your typical mission look like? Move/OW for the first few turns then break concealment? Double move all the way to the objective? Mix? I generally double move while in concealment and then only double move afterwards when I think it's safe to do so. But so far I've found that isn't always...

Re: Strategy for timed missions
As I said in my original comment, I'm all for trying the SMG strats. I'm interested in whether there are any other strategies I'm missing. I'd be surprised if PI intended players to solo every timed mission with a specialist with no gear.warbrand2 wrote:then take the advice I gave above.

Strategy for timed missions
Many of the timed missions I've had so far have seemed like an impossible task with the loadout I've chosen and I'm wondering if the problem is my play or if those missions need more turns. I've been playing on veteran. I could start bringing a smaller squad, all with SMGs, specialist to grab the ob...

Re: LW 2 - Linux & Mac
I've had more luck after copying xcomgame.upk and xcomgame.upk.uncompressed_size from the long war mod folder to the main game's folder, as suggested on reddit. Saves are working and I'm past the 1st mission. The mod's versions of those files should be at "~/.local/share/feral-interactive/XCOM...

For me, it crashes after the first mission. (Only tried it twice.)
