Black Market usually has at least one Scientist & Engineer for hire per month, in my experience. This option exists specifically to address the case you're stuck in, where no Scientists are dropping from missions.

I don't know if this comes from LW2 or vanilla, but I know that when I move my cursor around to move a soldier, a little red dot appears beside the health bar of any alien the soldier will be able to see from the space my cursor is currently sitting on. Doesn't show flanks explicitly, though.

Agree with Steel - Long War encourages you to build a deep roster of soldiers, not just level up one full squad worth. As long as you do that, you can recover from most losses. There are a couple of Long War-related options menu entries that don't appear until after you've loaded into the game. This may have been fixed in 1.5, but it was always this way prior.

AFAIK, assuming the shot hits , it will do damage normally. LR doesn't provide any damage reduction. Mods downloaded from the Workshop do not appear in the DLC list. They should appear in a list on the launch window (above the big green "Play Game" button), which is where you select the ones you want to play with before launching the game.
