Walk fire for the exact same reason as flush. My psionics all carry redscreen rounds so they can help with the other kind of mind control. I've been lucky enough to roll walk fire on one.

Not sure if it's a thing you can do, but maybe just take the smoke off the rocket so that it actually is useful?

EDIT - coupla other ideas:
Some kinda gas rocket.
Single-target rocket that rolls to hit, instead of scattering, but does more damage.

If it's a quick mission I tend to find them very useful. If I'm clearing out an HQ or murdering some other large body of troops, he's gonna run out. it isn't difficult to get at least two people in an area suppression. You don't "get" them anywhere. Nothing in the game lets the player move them where they want*. Maybe your pods scamper differently, but the advent I encounter all stand exactly one tile too far apart**. Yeah, getting a ...

On timed missions I'd rather just kill things with a walk-fire ranger than use a gunner to suppress. On missions where I fight a swarm of enemies, I usually find that they still manage to stand one or two tiles too far apart for Area Suppression. Why not tie it to armor? If every point of armor dropped the chance from 100 by 5% (10%?), it'd be easy to know who is fireproof, and you'd be rewarded for combining it with shredding weapons.
