That's cool!

That's the one tradeoff to the improved AI; even though they prefer high cover, they do so at the cost of bunching up more than in vanilla. In vanilla I think they always tried hardest to spread out more than respecting type of cover.

I don't find squads very useful. Most of the time I need to go into a mission with soldiers from different squads cos everyone else is in hospital. By the way, if you see your officer details, there is a button showing you the list of soldiers that have server under him (and how many missions each)...

It doesn't give you one effective scientist. It reduces the number of scientists required by research projects by one. So if a project needs 9 days and 2 scientists it afterward needs 9 days and 1 scientist. If instead you recruited a scientist instead, then the days required would drop to 6. Ah ok...

Easy simple rule of thumb is officer soldier advisers are always the winner, because of retaliation and also you can't easily be sure if you get rid of all faceless. Heh personally I think the gunner outclasses the ranger as well, because eventually gunner can learn traverse fire which is equivalent to light em up, and after you account for that gunners just do more damage with their main weapon. The gunners blade actually does pretty decent damage and is SUPER reliable. If you are sick of melee oriented aliens killing your tank gunners the knife as a counter works out pretty well too. I can't pass center mass up, it makes the gunner's main attacks shine bright. It's also hard for me to tell which unit a stun lancer will hit - they always seem to go for my specialist or something squishier than a gunner.

I doubt your campaign is bugged, just make sure you have the vast majority of your rebels on intelligence and use the avenger scan in a region you want to liberate to help the intel process. I honestly think it's fine the way it is. I think it's meant to be used at point blank range, and the tradeoff is it kills anything until like September in one shot. If you have a problem with the ranger's secondary, try using the gunner's secondary (lmao).
