IIRC, in later versions of LW(1), there were shortcut keys baked in for different speeds... [ ] and \ perhaps?

The Tactical Research only affects a small percentage, usually around 20%, of a specific species or two. Like Stun Lancers or Sectoids or Vipers and their ilk. That is, just put in the number of turns the mission will last right into the objective text, so it can be easily referenced during squad loadout.
