@ matt price - that is not evident at all, though personal experience does seem to collaborate it to a degree. We really could use some way to distinguish Vigilance levels in a region and if they go up or down.
Vigilance is still nebulous for all intents and purposes.

Not to point the obvious, but the liberation of a region currently gives you one free Radio Tower (in the same region), as well as some pretty hefty loot and corpses from the final assault. If there is no cap then it is infinite. To finish the mission you can either use the Dev Console or try to lower your graphics settings so it can properly draw the complete map and then try to EVAC.

If you escalate Vigilance too fast, naturally you will see more supply missions and troop columns as the aliens try to reinforce the region. If you do on average 2 Smash and Grab missions per region per month, that can net you on average 5 elirium/mission in the early game. You can use the rest of the loot to buy elirium from the black market. So the Smash and Grab missions per month can net you around 40-50 elirium, among other things. ...

You can still get elirium, though in the early missions the chance is a lot lower. However you can use the extra alloys and supplies to buy elirium crystals and cores from the Black Market.

As far as I know this has been the case since the original Xcom 2 - you do not have cover against your squadmates. However the AI seems to be wiser now - they use more often their psionic powers and try to flank you if possible. And give a lot more priority to flanked targets. In hindsight, this is ...

Well, they are activated on game basis, so you could probably install the DLC afterwards and then research/ build the items and Sparks.

You only get the choice at the beginning of a campaign - do you want the story missions or not.
There might be a way to trigger the missions using the Dev Console during a campaign, but I will personally not risk it.

Oh, XCOM 1 and Long War 1 definitely had innate height defence. Floaters were really scary just because when flying they got some 20 to 30 additional defence (some of them had DGG as well).

It would help if you can provide a bit more details what exactly is happening on your end. In general once a unit changes side, it will no longer have any cover for its new squadmates. Case in point, when you Mind Control an Alien/Advent unit, you can shoot at it without fearing that cover will help...

If you want to spend hours of real time to level 1 or 2 more soldiers at the end of a mission, be my guest.
A better use of your time and soldiers would be to simply send them on another missions - you will get a lot more rewards and xp from this.

Well, now that you mention it, I am not so sure. I did spend a lot of time in Long War 1 on top of UFOs, so I might be taking that for granted.
I will give it a test on the next mission. In the XcomGameCore.ini there is only mention of an Aim height bonus.

Well, it might be hard not to pull at least 2 pods together for the first firefight. What I strive for is to activate a pod on turn 1 or 2. When you open the menu during an active campaign there is a Long War 2 sub-menu. There you can find a slider to configure the cap of the graze band. It can go all the way to 0. In version 1.2 it did give very, very little XP. I have leveled a soldier or two with the reinforcement pod at the end of a mission. In general it is possible to farm them, but you will need quite a few pods (read 10+) to make it count.
