The most tangible bonus of combat fitness seems to be the two hp, so it's mostly used to just kind of fill out a tank build with some stats, or push a squishy character out of the danger zone. Actually, in 1.3 and on, you only need a GSGT to get Override. Considering how long the final level takes, that's a fair difference. I did find that I rarely got to play with my Resistance MECs though (in my 1.2 campaigns). The biggest pain was not having them available on the intel mini-retaliation...

Haywire Protocol (full name) is the basic Specialist ability that allows you to hack robots. You get it along with Hack at Squaddie.

The perk could be changed out for something else but then that makes an already sub-par knife just window dressing. Maybe someone else can point it out to me but I'm having a hard time imagining where I'd ever want to use the knife in a point blank situation over the main gun without Combatives. So...

I haven't, but I wouldn't expect this to "fix" characters that already have the old solace unlocked in their perk choices. All it does is correct the dependencies for future unlocks.
