Stealth missions in the age of chryssalids

Post by Undershaft »

This is a steep difficulty spike, to say the least. Up till now, my shinobi duo was quite capable of ... well, duoing, most free-or-retrieve-whatever missions. But, now, in the age of burrowed chryssalids, they have become more or less useless - even with a monstrous amount of save-scumming. How can you get in and out without being seen if you trigger an invisible face-eating-biomine that gives a shit about covertness and makes mincemeat out of your scout as soon as you approach the target?

Using battlescanners is no help here, because knowing they are there doesn't save you from getting sliced.
The only plan I could think of is to run in with one scout with iron skin and all the armor they can wear, survive the attack, continue running after losing stealth and head for the extraction zone while the other scout tries to complete the mission. This seems to me like a very bad plan, though, because a) you will probably not survive due to the frenzied chryssalid on your ass and the fire from the pods you activated after you lose stealth and b) the now activated pods around the objective will not necessarily leave.

Am I missing something here or are the days of the shinobi-missions gone?

My stealth team wiped due to a lid recently.
I'm thinking you could try a Shinobi+Specialist team. Since Specialist can hack remotely, it's less likely to get ambushed by burrowed lids near the objective. But you still need a lot of scanners and even scanning protocol to clear a safe path.
It's a dark event and will last for a month, I just simply stop doing stealth missions when this DE is up.

One thing I learned from playing LW2 is that sometimes we get too crazy about stealth missions and forget that we actually can get in, kill everything and get out. Maybe you could focus during this period on larger teams instead of small infiltration squads. Or just avoid these missions, like said above (I usually do that also).

Thanks, that's helpful advice. I wasn't aware it was a dark event, just assumed the chryssalids were part of the regular gang after a certain point. Does it really end after a month? This dark event's text doesn't say so, unlike others. Which dark events stick around and which disappear? Are only the troop upgrades permanent?

It's a vanilla DE, so I just assume it lasts for a month; and unfortunately I cannot confirm it for you, since I lost my campaign to Avatar timer while this DE is still up.

Permanent ones are usually called tactical dark events, those DEs are more about enemies getting a perk.
