Do Master Sergeant Level Units still get stat boosts from going on missions?

Post by marceror »

In Long War 1 a top level soldier would get a stat boost every four or so missions, like a boost to will, aim or less likely, mobility.

Is that still a thing in LW2? Inquiring minds want to know.

I don't think so, but you do get bonus stats for successful missions while in a squad under the same officer (+1 will, +1 dodge, and 0.0075 infiltration modifier per successful mission with that officer), and it caps out at 40 missions (well 40 for will, 20 for dodge, 34'ish = 0.25 modifier for infiltration) which means you probably won't reach that cap unless you really drag out the game or do every mission at 0% to try to feed it. I think this serves the same purpose.

The capstone level bonus got rolled into the officer/squad bonus', so there's still reasons to take them on missions, just with the same officers.

Makes sense as an alternative, though I think it would be cool to also have a bonus that isn't dependent on an officer, to reflect that over time a veteran soldier continues to gain some skill from continued combat operations.

Instead of every 4 missions, like it was in LW1, it should be every 6, or 8. And stats other than those boosted when in mission with an officer, like aim, mobility and defense could have a chance to be increased.

At any rate, I do very much like the squad system in LW2, and how it incentivizes squads to continue working as a team. It's just a lot more interesting when you have a large roster of soldiers, to think of them as a few key squads, vs. a huge roster of "dudes". It's also fun giving various squads their own theme. In my current game I have a squad of close family members. A squad of Latinos. A squad of Indians (the real Indians, not Native Americans), a professional squad of former US Navy SEALs (with matching uniforms and colors), and I'm currently working on a squad of crazies who paint their faces and hope to make Advent run in fear at the sheer sight of them. I have a recon squad comprised primarily of Shinobis and a couple of specialists (for hacking), and all members have more stealthy looking "props". I also have a couple of non-themed squads comprised of various people I know in RL. Each squad has their own backstory and description, and insignia, and nearly all soldiers in the squad have a backstory that ties them into the squad. At any rate, it's a great addition. I currently have 9 squads, and am still thinking about what my 10th would be, should I have the opportunity to create it.

I'm really not sure how many squads/soldiers will be ideal for LW2. Even with 9 squads and a handful of Haven Advisors, I'm sometimes finding that I have to turn down missions due to lack of soldiers. It's actually pretty great! :P

I almost forgot, I even have a Walking Dead squad, with a back story the generally makes their inclusion makes sense in the XCOM world.

Rick is the Assault, Carl is the Ranger, Sasha is the Sharpshooter, Maggie is the Specialist, Abraham is the Gunner, Glen is the Technical, Michonne is the Shinobi and Darryl is the Grenadier. I try to keep their look as post-apocalyptic as possible. I was inspired after watching the season opening last week. :P
