Advent Tower vs HQ Assault

Post by Nibelung44 »

What do you guys think about these two? I fear more the first than the second, is that normal?

It seems for me also that the command pod in the advent tower mission has more chance spawning on the roof than in the room, is it what you see too? Perhaps that's tied to difficult, I'm on veteran ironman.

Tower is a "sneak in and kill while they are stunned" mission. It's not particularly hard (not harder than HQ) but it requires a different approach since you can't just shoot everything while taking your time. You need someone who can hack the station (Shinobi or Specialist ideally with a useful AWC perk like covert, shadowstep or Run and Gun) and soldiers who can quickly clean up the stunned aliens (Assaults, Rangers and Gunners work nicely).
Try to hack the station, then while the enemy is stunned, kill as many as you can, ideally all of them. Don't be afraid to use explosives, you don't get corpses anyway.

Advent tower mission is fun, just be sure to bring at least a Shinobi (mandatory) and a Specialist (won't hurt).

I found the HQ assault rather tedious: you have to chase down pods after pods of ADVENT and Aliens, hidden in dozens of buildings/room, so after the nth pod is disposed of you tend to lose concentration, out of boredom , and then (of course) it's when s...hits the fan.
Be sure to bring one (or two) high level specialists, and at least a Sharpshooter. Breaking visual contact after your lead element have triggered a pod and waiting for the enemy to charge your troops set in overwatch is a worthy tactic.

Really?
Usually for me it's sit in the woods and kill the pod patrolling in front of the first building then wait for the closest one to come investigate, then the next, then the next ...
Usually by the time i can finally put my troops on the roof of the first building to start sniping what's left, there is only 1 pod left in addition to the command pod

I always dread the HQ Tower because of the two it's the one where RNG can screw you the most. You can get blocked by a building without a ladder and only a window, there can be static pods, you can get screwed by a patrol doing an unexpected 180º while you're trying to sneak past, etc. On HQ Assault you many more options and you can just camp a spot if needed, but on Tower you got reinforcements to worry about.

My advice:

- Always bring a Support Grenadier. They get you out of so many situations.
- Bring your best AoE damage dealer. I usually go with a Technical early (fireman or fireman hybrid) because I use them so much on the early game that they tend to be my highest ranked, but you can do Assault with Trench Gun or extra Grenadier with frags or whatnot.
- A Shinobi with ghostwalker (even better with Covert) that you can use to sneak into the console in case the RNG screws you and you can't sneak the whole team.
- A specialist you can use to disable turrets spawning on top of the console room's doors. Not required. Using Airdrop on your Grenadier while you wait for a pod to pass by = great.

They each have their pitfalls, both need a different approach too. I actually recently did both on Legendary and managed flawless on them, mid game.
For the former, getting a hacker in position ready to mass stun whilst you setup with your other troops is a solid tactic. Stopping the reinforcements before they start affords you the time to mop up the map. If you get caught whilst stealthing, a support grenadier helps a great deal. Just remember that hack should be priority, leaving can result in a bad situation snowballing real fast once advent start dropping in on you.

For the HQ, take your time. Pick a map edge to avoid flanks, scout to be aware of enemy locations and engage one pod at a time.

Something that should be noted. A spotter, dfa sniper (or two), plus elevation is great for either map. You can easily cut a regular pod in half before they even get in range. Highly recommended.
