Can something be done about pod patrol routes?

Post by Iridar51 »

I really wish that pods would be distributed evenly around the map, instead of each pod having a randomized path, that can and will intersect with other pods'. Sometimes to the point of two pods sticking to each other through the majority of the patrol path.

It's a big problem for me, especially early game, when there's no access to scanning protocol / battle scanners. Stealth shinobis can't handle scouting either, because 1.3 nerfed them into oblivion and they take too many rankups to come online.

I'm sick and tired of having to pull two pods, just to realize on the next turn there's a third pod a few tiles behind them.

I can't be the only one having an issue with this. Can it be solved with ini edits or other mods?

I'm in the opposite camp, because one, it adds randomized danger, and two, it lets you ambush two pods at once with patience, planning and a little luck.

Both are Good Things to me.

I don't see any problem with pod patrol routes. They're fine as is.

And stealth shinobis haven't been nerfed at all, much less "nerfed into oblivion". They're just no longer particularly useful because of the pod size (smaller, more numerous) and infiltration time changes (you're encouraged to bring 4+ soldiers). Additionally, non-stealth shinobis were massively buffed to the point where it's pretty much the strongest class in the game now, especially the first 1/2 of the campaign.
Excitement continues to build as city centers across the globe prepare for the latest incarnation of Groundhog Day.

Gotta disagree with you there. Shinobis are still great to scout ahead for my squads. Hell, they are even great at removing advent units from time to time (when I found all pods in a map). Then you also have the "muton control service" strat, where you put a Shinobi with combatives right next to one and have it try to murder you with melee.

As far as pods clustering together, can't say I had that happen so often that it made it into a problem. The times it does happen I see it as a gift from Jake Solomon himself, as I can roast them all together and watch most of them panic and/or burn (as well as thousands of needless particles destroy my FPS in the process)

Oddly enough, I don't feel so much need in scouting anymore. Actually, I usually go straight to objective and try to engage first non-solo drone pod as fast as I can. It's easier and safer to just kill all the things. If I try to avoid contact and so some semi-stealth it always end badly, I got surrounded and engaged by all pods simultaneously.

I'm finding the same. I try and use squads of 4 as much as possible as its the most fun for me and that means no baggage. Everybody fights. If I happen to bring a Shinobi (mostly they sit in the barracks waiting for missions where you don't start concealed like as the 5th soldier for S&G) then they are specced for fighting. Only useless (low mobility and aim) Shinobis get stealth builds and then they are left for huge missions like HQ assaults, where I may just use a sword Shinobi anyway.

Grenadiers are my go-to pointmen in GOPs as they are still near fully effective if they blue move into a new pod. Second best are overwatcher Specialists/Rangers.

I'm still scouting with Shinobi's and I always bring one or two on my current campaign on a mission because they're working very well for me, so I'm not sure why OP would suggest they've been "nerfed into oblivion". I tend to use them to go around the first patrol to see where everything is on the map, so that I can divide and conquer, making sure that if I run and gun into a group that there's not another group behind it that will activate.
