Covering Fire not proccing

is there any reason that covering fire on my Sentinel Specialist wouldn't prod on two advent I have vision on who took basic flashbanged shots? They didn't have SStep. I've noticed this before at times but just assumed it was an los quirk I didn't care enough to investigate. This one is blatantly obvious the shots should have proceed.

Do you have a save? That'd be very useful on getting this solved.

Covering Fire has various issues, of which the most annoying is that it won't proc on anything your soldier didn't have LOS of at the beginning of the turn. This is deliberate, not a bug – if you go into the base game code, there are comments specifically pointing this out as intended behaviour. I have no idea why, though – you'd have to ask Firaxis.

Hmmm. And so there's no way to fix that? And does that mean that the debuff won't apply if they move and are fired upon if they started there move out of LoS? Thanks for your response, Saph.

And sorry, I didn't think to save it. I will if it happens again.

The debuff from covering fire will apply to ANY overwatch shot taken by the soldier, not just those proc'd by non-movement. So the behavior Saph described is just for the edge cases in which an enemy starts the turn out of LOS, moves to the very edge of the soldier's LOS, and then takes an action.

In most cases, an enemy that starts it's turn out of LOS will either:

1. Remain out of LOS
2. Move completely into LOS and proc a normal OW shot (which does apply the aim debuff)

The "bug" is a pretty annoying behavior to be sure, but I don't think it's quite as relevant as you think it is.

Ahhhh alright. Thanks for the explanation. It s weird because both were in sight the whole time. They were only 5 or so tiles away.

I've had covering fire not trigger on targets that were in LOS multiple times

Someone said it won't trigger if they shoot at the soldier who's doing the overwatch - dunno if that's true or not.
