No indication of avatar project showing.
Was given the defeat screen.

You got killed by the Avatar project.
The Avatar project is running all the time, but in order to see the doom bar, you have to liberate a region.

Ideally you should be liberating your first region by mid april at the latest. The income bonus from liberation is absolutely vital to stay ahead of ADVENT's own tech progress.
