XP for failed mission
XP for failed mission
Is getting xp from failed missions intentional? I had one where I came in with a crew too small for the objective (thought I could just sneak in, destroy the monument and escape, rather than kill all enemies) so I just evac'd out without fighting anything and my dude got a level.
Re: XP for failed mission
Without fighting anything, really? You can evac and get some xp for kills (in addition to kill xp, you'll get mission xp based on kills), even if another unit killed them.

Re: XP for failed mission
I had a VIP extraction where the engineer got ruthlessly shot down. My Shinobi who roped up while watching his charge die came back to base with a shiny new promotion. I never fired a shot.
Re: XP for failed mission
Yep, as soon as I read the mission goals where I had to defeat all enemies, I roped out immediately and got a level without fighting anything.
Re: XP for failed mission
I tried to replicate this and couldn't.
My setup :
1) Took single Specialist soldier on a supply raid type mission
2) Launched mission at 0% infiltration
3) Immediately dropped evac flare
4) Used console command \AISkipAI to quickly advance through 5 turn evac timer
5) Used in-code breakpoints to verify that assigned MissionExperience was 0 (0 enemies killed 40 units on map at start)
Final results was :
So this unit got (correctly)
6) Return to avenger, unit had no promotion.
So this appears to be working as designed.
------------------------------
We have seen other cases of unit ended up with much more mission experience we can account for, which results in insta-promotions after every mission, even if no new xp is added. Haven't been able to track down where the source is however.

Xwynns got a promotion from a 100% failed mission in his latest video. Timestamp: https://youtu.be/W3_KJr5Kvmo?t=8m
Could it be because one of the mission objectives was "Extract all XCOM soldiers?"

Re: XP for failed mission
Our suspicion is that the soldiers earned two level-ups from a prior mission, but you can only register one level-up per mission, so the level-ups you are seeing on failed missions are "clearing the books" so to speak.

Ah, I thought this was prevented by default like in XCOM1, but I guess I hallucinated that.johnnylump wrote:Our suspicion is that the soldiers earned two level-ups from a prior mission, but you can only register one level-up per mission, so the level-ups you are seeing on failed missions are "clearing the books" so to speak.
First Mission:
Sq. Assault and Rookie on Extremely Light jailbreak
3 Advent are killed, between 1-2 by the Rookie I don't remember exactly. 2 Drones active but not killed. Assault dies.
Rookie wins the mission and is promoted to Shinobi.
Second Mission:
That Shinobi 100% fails a VIP Escort and is promoted to LCPL
Does that amount of experience add up correctly?
Re: XP for failed mission
Ah yeah, that makes sense. I think he was a pretty low ranked grenadier who had gotten a lot of kills in a previous mission.johnnylump wrote:Our suspicion is that the soldiers earned two level-ups from a prior mission, but you can only register one level-up per mission, so the level-ups you are seeing on failed missions are "clearing the books" so to speak.

Re: XP for failed mission
I'll have to do the math but the fact you had a small-squad successful mission -- which generates a lot of XP per soldier -- and a low-ranking soldier is certainly the kind of situation where this is most likely to hapenBookofAeons wrote:Ah, I thought this was prevented by default like in XCOM1, but I guess I hallucinated that.johnnylump wrote:Our suspicion is that the soldiers earned two level-ups from a prior mission, but you can only register one level-up per mission, so the level-ups you are seeing on failed missions are "clearing the books" so to speak.

XP Gain on Failed Missions
Playing on version 1.1 and had a mission that I evac'd out of without doing anything (had a very underequipped squad - not sure what past-me was thinking). So I sat at the spawn, called evac, and aborted the mission without killing any aliens. And when this squad got home multiple of them got promoted (?!). Do soldiers gain XP even on missions that go absolutely no where and I happened to get lucky with a number of them being close to promotions?
