Snapshot is the best pick for an early sniper. It removes their largest flaw so that they are no longer a liability. There isn't really any point where they are weak though. Specialists and rangers are the only two classes that start with the ability to fire two shots at LCPL, so just give them a big gun and let them go to town. Specialists make great overwatch troopers far earlier then infantry. They get two shots with one rank. Two shots is better then one with overwatch. If you as much as graze the enemy, they lose their yellow alert action. Its really nice to have someone early who can effectively shut down yellow alert...

Actually I never used sapper. The opportunity cost is too high. I could never justify taking it over rapid deployment. No, I'm using 1.5. I'm not having any problems with shredder. Its not 100% reliable destruction, but I heard sapper isn't reliable either. I make grenadiers my primary officers. They don't need to be commanded, can utilize the best of their kit as a free action, are normally safe, and are normally in command range.
