Regional ADVENT HQ Assault - Advice needed

Post by Daetya »

I've attempted it for the first time yesterday, on Rookie/Ironman becuase i'm too bad for playing Long War at higher difficulties. So far the campaign was good, even too easy on the first months with almost no issues except few losses due to map bugs or the occasional missclick.

I successfully pursued the Find a Lead and Liberation chain, taken down the Network Tower with no losses, then hit the wall of the Regional HQ Assault. I did expect it to be hard. And i enjoyed it so much, even if at the end i was pretty angry with myself for being that bad at a game i like so much.

I recorded it and uploaded on Youtube. Sorry for the occasional background noise. If anyone experienced is so kind to go trough it and waste almost an hour of his life watching me butchering the gameplay, i'd love to get better trough advices on what i did wrong and why. Tough some of the major mistakes were so evident that even i noticed them, i'm sure i did so many smaller (or not ) mistakes that i didn't notice.
I had infilitrated to 200%, obviously.

I'm about to try it again, i've upgraded to Magnetic Weapons and Predator armor, another squad wipe will likely end my campaign but i'm ready for it. :)

From a quick scan of the video, I noticed you were very forward. There are a lot of enemies on the map, 33+. One thing I noticed, I can draw almost the whole map to me without really leaving the LZ. If you place yourself near the first building and use LOTS of things that go boom, the whole map comes running save for the command pod at the end. It makes things easier so you don't have to deal with the Squadsight turrets that do more damage to your crew than anything else. I've done three of these on Vet (working on a commander run now) and the camp method seems to be the best so far.

I stopped at the first building of the map, barely three blue move forwards. (except the Shinobi doing things he shouldnt have done and i don't know why i had a Shinobi in an Assault HQ in first place). You are saying i should have killed the two drones and then starting using explosives on the envirorment in order to pull them to me? Is it worth wasting grenades/rockets and losing the height advantage i had with half of the squad? the landing site didn't offer many full covers position either, but i guess picking targets pod by pod while they come it's better then having to move forward and risk to activate multiple at once + the 1-2 turrets.

So basically hug the landing site and throw rockets on walls while overwatching with everybody?

Thanks a lot for the reply by the way.

Take two Sharpshooters, one with "rapid holo" and second with the Death from above + stealth Shinobi for scouting and eliminate all enemies, turrets from distance one by one. Keep your Shinobi's concealment at all time and use him only for scouting, rest of team members should keep safe theirs flanks and support with grenades and flash-bangs, barrage/overwatch fire.
Take nearest roof and locate properly your snipers, keep scouting by shinobi, prepare ambush and kill by sharpshooters first enemies, rest squad overwatching, kill survivors next turn , repeat with next pod.

Remember, mission with no timers = no hurry! Keep constantly forward but slowly and kill all from distance what moves or not moves too :)

Best team IHMO
2 Sharpshooters : first with Holo Perks Gunslinger Officer <-> second with DFA + Damn Good Ground + Tracers/scope/autoloaders/Stock
1 Shinobi - for scouting only, your snipers would have easier job (+ghostwalker/covert perks)
1 Specialist - with medikit abilities + extra Medikits to keep alive your soldiers and help some panicked, stunned soldiers. Tracers/Scope/
1. Gunner - to keep hordes of enemies do not come to close and lower their's aim. Tracers/magazines/hairtriggers/
1. Ranger - with overwatch abilities and AP rounds + Hair triggers /scope/autoloaders in weapon.

I brought a couple of shape charges on my first HQ assault. Give them to a shinobi or assault. Apparently they are VERY loud, but they also allow you to open up the outer wall of a building so that when enemy pods come patrolling through, your soldiers can see them
