Just got the defeat screen and not sure why

2nd lowest difficulty.
About 1 year in.
No indication of avatar project showing.
Was given the defeat screen.
Is this a bug?

You got killed by the Avatar project.
The Avatar project is running all the time, but in order to see the doom bar, you have to liberate a region.

I have not liberated a region yet. Was taking my sweet time.

Ideally you should be liberating your first region by mid april at the latest. The income bonus from liberation is absolutely vital to stay ahead of ADVENT's own tech progress.
