Avenger Defense Tactics

My last 2 campaigns (1.4, L/H) have come to a screeching halt due to the 'UFO hunts the Avenger' dark event. Foremost, I didn't think it was worth skipping every mission to keep my best soldiers available for an unknown amount of time until the UFO popped, so I was using a B squad each time. By turn 2 there are 15-20 ayys in front of the ramp, and few cover options for my squad. Even with smoke and CC, 20 shots at 25% make my squad look like swiss cheese pretty fast.

What are your tactics for Avenger defense?

Lots of shredder guns, or even better shredstorm cannons. The way the map is organized, all the aliens come from one direction, and there is a ridiculous number of them, so shredders become incredibly efficient. I've killed like 25 enemies in a turn on the UFO defense.
