[Scenario] Against All Odds (spoiler warning)

Post by spoop »

Today I can proudly announce that the vision of my father to unite the South American continent is close to being achieved. All South American governments have agreed in principle to work together and form a united state in the future. -Hanse Castillo hours before learning that astronomers had spotted eight huge alien bases building an invasion fleet.

Image

„Against all Odds" is a scenario that features custom ship designs for all factions, adjusted AIs that can fight in space, faster research progression, aliens that actually try to invade earth, not just subvert it, and a lot more….

Image

You begin the game in command of all South American nations, with the project to unite them already 95% completed. Your main objective is to protect South America from the aliens and eventually unite it. But beware, the other factions have not stood by idle, and have also secured some regions of the world. So, diplomacy might work better than pure force.

Image

To play the scenario, you need to download it from the attachment here or from the discord post

Then you need to unzip it and place the save file in the following folder.

\Documents\My Games\TerraInvicta\Saves

Image

After that, you need to disable "use compressed save files" in the settings (start Terra Invicta and go to settings).

Upgrade to version 0.3.1 or higher.

Then you can go to "load game" and you should see a save file of the Scenario.

Hints:

Most other factions have a space program, so declaring war on them will result in them seizing or bombarding your space assets.

The aliens can land as early as 2024, so making sure you have nukes available is critical.

Argentinia starts with some nuclear program progress, and Brazil has enough economic strength to also build one in time. It might be a viable option to also secure nukes outside of South America.

Tech will progress faster than usual, so you won’t have to spend 100 hours before building ships that can fight.

Trading resources with factions that already have a space economy is more efficient than boost construction in South America.

All custom ships are specialized; the name of the ship class gives a hint as to what you're up against. Prepare accordingly.

The aliens escort most assault carriers with a heavy escort, so it’s critical that you build enough armies on Earth to not have to nuke every landing in the long term. Don’t be hesitant to use nukes while you are there.

Israel and North Korea have nukes that are relatively easy to secure.

It’s unrealistic to prevent the alien administration from forming in the scenario, so focus on containing it until you have enough armies to directly fight them (they won’t use nukes offensively).

Once you have a space economy, reconsider your ship designs to adjust to what you’re facing. Most alien ships and all faction ships are specialized for a specific weapon set, so build to counter them.

Making non-aggression pacts with some other factions is a good idea, since it causes their spaceships not to initiate hostile actions against you. (AI factions can bombard in this scenario.)

The most exotic materials are found in the Immortal and Surprise class ships.

Don't be scared of the total alien fleet power; some of their ship classes inflate it by having 8K combat power per ship.

Feedback and improvement suggestions are best given on the official discord in the ti-moding-forum area

Can the scenario file please go somewhere else that does not demand I install an extension to my browser to block an extension (Ad Block) that I deliberately installed, please? I tried to download this but cannot proceed unless I block my Ad Blocker, which is more than a little bit absurd when you think about it.
This looks like fun - what build/version was used to create it though please?

Sry i did not notice that, since I have adds blocked by default, the ideal place to get it from is the official discord.
If u can name me a better fileupload service, I'm happy to upload it there.

It was created in version 0.3.42
We have multible reports of players playing it on version 0.3.47 with out issues, so any higher version should work

EDIT: I managed to compress the file enough to upload it here on the forum.

Ah. Thanks.
I have got the file now from this thread (and it looks like a blast) so no need for me to go on any sort of 'social' media. Phew.

Quick question - if I disable 'Use compressed save files' as per instructions, will this mean I need to re-enable it in order to load any regular runs?
And if the answer to that is 'yes', what would happen if I made a .gz archive of the scenario save file?

One more - please see screenshot.

Is that correct? I ask because the PC seems to think it's an After Effects file type.....(with apologies for wrong file highlighted)

Jes, you need to enable it again to load your regular compressed runs
neilwilkes wrote: Fri Dec 30, 2022 12:10 pm what would happen if I made a .gz archive of the scenario save file?
unlikely to work

PC shows it correctly as a .json file type, so you should now see it in game and be able to start playing.

.json is a fileformat used by Terra Invicta, Adobe and many more.

Jes
Um, no?

I have "Use compressed save files" disabled and can load the game just fine.
The option is just to save some disk-space - not that the files take all that much space un-compressed (I think the largest of my files is around 30 MB)

Edit: I think I misunderstood.
Is the question if you can load a compressed save while having compressing disabled?
Then you are correct, of course.

Much appreciated.
Confirmation of what I suspected likewise - that's a shame.

Why is this a shame? You can disable "Use compressed save files", load the scenario save, enable "Use compressed save files", save the scenario (it will create a save in .gz format and I have no idea why @snoop hadn't done so before the scenario was released) and you can play the scenario and normal games without any further changes.

I actually do so, currently, and I like how much you are an underdog in the scenario. However, perhaps in the next release of the scenario the game should start at a later date because habs on Mars in 2022 are for me too much of an alternate reality as if taken from much appreciated For All Mankind. Perhaps it's a scenario for its fourth season ;)

It's a shame only from the POV of a lazy old man of 60, and no other.
What would be cool is not having to remember to launch game, go into settings, change save file type, come out, restart & then load.
It would be more elegant if the scenario was delivered in the same form as regular saved games is all I was saying.

The idea of the scenario itself looks daunting - which is what will make it so much fun to play I suspect.
Winning should simply never be guaranteed, or why bother playing?

I have to say that in some previous .5x or .4x version (I don't remember) the scenario was constantly crashing at December 13th 2023 but in .54 and .55 it so far works nicely (even when loading the save that previously was crashing).

I know, and it was a vanilla bug that I could not do anything about.   :?

That's why I post the versions where I tested it without issues and recommend playing on those.

Is it intended that some (I would even say most) human Troop Carriers have no marine module?

Jes, they that's intended. They can be refit later on to them.

Although the factions that have sufficient space resources, should build ships with all modules from the start.

OK, so I like this scenario, a lot! I have noticed a few quirks. First, the skills of the councilors has been heavily altered from the basic, getting the 'Purge' and 'Coup d'tate' attributes seem to be almost non-existent. Thus overthrowing other nations is almost impossible. Granted, I haven't done the obligatory 3+ turns of 'Increase Unrest' and 'Public Campaign' yet. Second, the over abundance of Xenoforming and Alien Actions, leaves very little time to perform other actions, especially with four councilors. Once you get your sixth one, things settle down a bit. Third, I noticed that the other factions were already established around Jupiter and 'Mission to Jupiter' was still in the que for general discovery, also, as soon as I 'discovered' a tech, like IR Lasers, the other factions already had it.

That being said, I've devoted 80+ hours to just this scenario and I'm NOT quitting! Those Aliens will rue the day they entered the Sol system and their Human quislings will be hunted down and tried for 'Crimes Against Humanity'! Now, if only I can figure out how to get some Coups going.

The generation of the counselor pool is actually one of the few things that has not been altered. You must be just getting unlucky with the counselors that generate for you.

As for xenoformation, it's not intended that you can clear up all of it on the map, but it's definitely doable to keep South America clean.

"Other human factions" can mostly ignore what global technologies you have and have not unlocked. It's "against all odds" after all.

But it's great to hear you're enjoying the scenario. Feel free to post screenshots from your playthrough.
