Demo GDP development

I played the demo and noticed that GDP seemed to move down relentlessly for the EU.
I put about 20% of investment in economy and GDP refused to rise, even though there should be an uptick in gdp/capita every time enough investment points were spent there. And with the population growing GDP should have grown from that alone, yet it kept dropping.
Since gdp is an important measure, determining investment points available and the difficulty of various actions, I'd much appreciate for the final release to have:
1. A clear explanation of factors driving gdp;
2. A clear way to influence gdp since economy investment does not always seem to do that now.
